Brutality and violence towards children in South Sudan have reached “terrible” levels, according to Virginia Gamba, the United
Nations” Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed
Conflict. The kidnappings are carried out with the goal of recruiting minors to fight in the conflict for the government forces or other armed groups. Gamba noted that children are often exploited and made to commit
atrocities and violence against civilians and other children.
