Knock, 17. “Merciful like the Father”. The
traditional novena to the Blessed Virgin of Knock, Ireland, has the same theme
as the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy inducted by Pope Francis. The novena
began on Sunday, 14 August, and will conclude on Monday the 22nd, marked by
celebrations and seminars hosted by the Shrine of Our Lady.
Bishop Michael Smith of Meath opened the celebrations with a reflection on the theme
of mercy. On Saturday, 20 August, Bishop Philip Boyce of Raphoe will offer a
talk entitled “The Name of God is Mercy”, while the following day Bishop Peter
Doran of Elphin will preach on the theme “The Joy of the Gospel”, and Fr
Richard Gibbons, rector of the Marian shrine, will offer a reflection entitled
“Knock, an engagement with Mercy”.
