Pope Encourages Members of Italian Nurses Group

Pope Francis on March 3, 2018, reminded nurses of the four basic tasks of the nursing ethical code, namely, promoting health, preventing illness, restoring health and alleviating suffering.

His remarks came in a meeting in Paul VI Hall with some 6,500 members of the Federation of Colleges of Professional Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Child Minders (IPASVI), reported by Vatican News. The group will be meeting in Rome in the next days and represents 450,000 members.

Describing nurses as “€œexperts in humanity”€, Pope Francis on Saturday said they are “€œcalled to carry out an irreplaceable task of humanization in a distracted society which too often leaves the weaker people on the margins, and is interested only in those “worthwhile or who meet the criteria of efficiency or profit.”€

The Holy Father acknowledged the hard work nurses do and urged patients to be appreciative. And he recalled the nurses who he said saved his life when he was gravely ill as a young man.
